Which service to use?

There are only two points you need to consider when shipping an international consignment with Amtrak.

1) When does your consignment need to arrive at its destination? Does it need to arrive quickly via an express
air service, or do you have more time on your hands?
2) What size is the consignment and what does it weigh?

Airtrak

An express service for documents, parcels and freight worldwide by air. Whatever your requirements,
if you need your parcel to reach its destination quickly and efficiently then this service is for you.

  • Weight: Max. 30 kilos per parcel
  • Dimensions: Max. L x W x H = 200cm, Max. L or W or H = 150cm

Roadtrak Europe

A reliable delivery service for parcels to Europe by road. This service is for the less time sensitive consignment
to major European destinations offering both economical rates combined with road based transit times.

  • Weight: Max. 35 kilos per parcel
  • Dimensions: Max. L x W x H = 200cm, Max. L or W or H = 150cm

How to send your parcels

Online Despatch

Managing and shipping your international services with Amtrak has never been simpler. Shipments can be booked online and labels printed in the same way as your domestic consignments. The system eliminates paperwork and will provide online tracking for all your parcels. The online booking system captures all the special information required for international deliveries and will automatically generate a pro-forma or commercial invoice if required. International services are available simply as a menu item on the existing online despatch system so there is no need for a separate system or log-in.

Shipping Tips

Please ensure that your consignment is adequately packed with both inner and outer wrapping, the more fragile the item is, the better the inner packing must be to prevent the item moving whilst in transit. The outer packaging should be robust and strong, ideally in a cardboard carton, which is sealed with good quality tape and plastic strapping.

Labelling

The online booking system will automatically print all the necessary labels required for shipment.

Customs Paperwork

The online booking system will prompt you to print a pro forma or commercial invoice if required. Please print all invoices onto company letterhead.

A pro-forma invoice is to be used for consignments that are being supplied to the consignee free of charge.

A commercial invoice is to be used for consignments that are being sold to the consignee.

The system will produce the correct number of copies required, please retain one for your records and attach all others to the package within a 'Documents Enclosed' wallet.

The online system will ask you whether your consignment is documents, since these do not require customs paperwork. Please refer to the 'What can be sent as a document' section of this User Guide.

What is volumetric weight?

If your consignment consists of a large parcel/s of relatively low weight, the volumetric weight of the consignment will be calculated for pricing purposes. The online system will automatically calculate this weight and if higher, will automatically charge at the volumetric weight.

How to calculate the volumetric weight

For consignments via our Air services multiply the length x width x height in centimetres and then divide the total by 6000. This will give the volumetric weight of the consignment.

For consignments via our Road services multiply the length x width x height in centimetres and then divide the total by 4000. This will give the volumetric weight of the consignment.

For consignments via our Freight services multiply the length x width x height in centimetres and then divide the total by 3000. This will give the volumetric weight of the consignment.

In all cases, if you have more than one package you will need to use the above calculation for each package.

Amtrak International will charge for which ever is the greater weight, actual or volumetric.

Arranging for your consignment to be collected

Once your consignment has been booked online, if you have a pre-arranged collection time, please leave the parcels for collection as normal. If not, then contact your local Amtrak depot to arrange for a collection to be made from your premises.
